The Government of Trinidad and Tobago has expressed interest in enhancing medical education to better meet the needs of the community and to generate a greater number of physicians for the nation and the region. There is also a desire to offer students with diverse educational backgrounds an opportunity to become essential members of the health sector.
Under the TTHSI, discussions will be initiated with local stakeholders with a view to identifying constraints and gaps in the existing infrastructure and systems which impact the development of a full-range training and research capability in Trinidad and Tobago. The intention is to assess the implications for improving institutional capacity and enhancing current medical education and research standards. This will require the consideration of a variety of strategies and models, and ultimately deciding on a conceptual framework which will inform the implementation process. Issues to be addressed include:
Regional physician/specialty shortages
Specific types of medical education needed
Possible collaborations and levels of interest across the region
