Recent estimates suggest that approximately 3% of Trinidad and Tobago's adult population is living with HIV/AIDS, and data from the Ministry of Health indicate that AIDS is now the leading cause of death among young adults. Over the years, several strategies have been adopted to treat with the issues of treatment and prevention, and a five-year HIV/AIDS National Strategic Plan 2003 – 2007 had been developed to reduce the incidence of HIV infections in Trinidad and Tobago and to mitigate the negative impact of HIV/AIDS on persons infected and affected.
Over the course of the implementation of the TTHSI, collaborations will be developed which would focus on developing/augmenting educational programmes reaching all levels of healthcare providers from physicians, to nurses, to health volunteers. Efforts in this area will dovetail with activities being pursued by the National AIDS Coordinating Committee and the Medical Research Foundation of Trinidad and Tobago.
