Over the years, significant systemic challenges have been experienced at the country's healthcare facilities. Notwithstanding the decentralisation which has resulted from health sector reform, varying levels of challenges remain in adopting efficient and responsive approaches to the management and delivery of the heath care.
During the course of the TTHSI, and building on the recommendations of previous institutional and sector-wide recommendations, several interventions will be pursued which support Government's intention to expand clinical capacity and instil a culture of high quality and safe medical care. An overview assessment of systems and procedures at the Eric Williams Medical Sciences Complex has been undertaken, which verify several diversions in practice at the facility from standard local and international benchmarks spanning the clinical programme, records and information systems, laboratory and support services, governance and protocols.
Efforts are being finalised with a view for a more comprehensive audit at the San Fernando General Hospital. Following this audit, and having reviewed the existing recommendations and programmes under implementation at the facility, specific performance improvement models will be recommended for SFGH including, inter alia:
- clinical, administrative, and educational plans,
- human resource requirements,
- finance systems,
- performance incentives,
- management structures, and
- regulatory requirements
with the associated measurement parameters. |
